The county is the home of the Carlisle Correctional Facility, one of Indiana's newest and largest prisons, the Merom Power Station, whose huge smokestacks are a county landmark, several large coal mines and conservation projects like the Minnehana. Sullivan is the county seat of Sullivan County, and is a picturesque community with a town square that hosts the Corn Festival each fall (usually the second weekend in September).

Sullivan is close to Terre Haute, the home to five institutions of higher learning, which not only offer educational opportunities, but also serve as centers for entertainment, recreation, cultural activities and business assistance.
