Brazil is located on The National Road which we know better as Highway 40. If you click on The National Road, you can find the rest (from Conner Prairie Farm's site) of this excerpt, "New towns seemingly sprang up over night along the routes and many villages and hamlets too far removed from the roads withered. Brazil, Indiana, is a perfect example of this phenomenon. It grew from a stage line relay station to become the county seat of Clay County, taking over from Bowling Green, a once-thriving town which had the misfortune to be situated too far from the National Road." Famous individuals with roots in Brazil include Judy Deakins, the wife of General Harry Barnes who is an ISU graduate and a General of the Marine Corps. Indianapolis Attorney Byron L. Myers was raised in Brazil, as was the Dean of the IU School of Medicine Robert W. Holden, M.D.. The late all around entertainer Scatman Crothers was born in Brazil. One of Scatman's friends, the also talented Boone Dunbar first tickled the ivories in Clay County. Former Indiana Governor George Craig was a favorite son and current political aspirant for the 7th district congressional seat and former VP of ISU Ed Pease is from Brazil. And from the world of music, we cannot forget Henry Lee Summer. Many Clay Countians have been educated in Terre Haute at one of the five institutions of higher learning, which not only offer educational opportunities, but also serve as centers for entertainment, recreation, cultural activities and business assistance.
