BRIEF THERAPY: A MANAGED CARE APPROACH Presenter: Dr. George Everly Delivery systems for mental health services have seen a dramatic change in the last several years. Growing emphasis is being placed on brief psychotherapeutic models underscoring symptom-focused therapies. The treatment of personality disorders, however, presents a unique challenge for those utilizing time-limited frameworks. Theodore Millon's biosocial theory of personality disorders represents a perspective on these disorders which may be harnessed to provide a psychotherapeutic framework uniquely suited to time-limited therapy. This approach attempts to avoid the "revolving door" dilemma that often characterizes symptom-focused psychotherapies. |

SUBSTANCE ABUSE ASSESSMENT Dr. Henry Richards This course will demonstrate the use of the MCMI-III interpretive reports in treatment for substance abuse and the use of profiles in the supervision of group counselors. A framework will be provided for optimizing the value of the MCMI test assessment of origins, perpetuations, and preferred intervention strategies for addictions. An analysis will be given of the primary biopsychosocial functions of addiction that support drug use in each of the personality disorder prototypes. Clinical formulations of addiction provided by the MCMI-IIl interpretive reports will be examined and suggestions offered as to how to take the best advantage of their insights. |

| THE MACI TEST: A DYNAMIC ADOLESCENT
ASSESSMENT Presenter: Dr. Robert Tringone This workshop will focus on the integration of the MACI and projective tests, in particular, the Rorschach and the Thematic Apperception Test. With the MACI test profile as the starting point, a framework will be outlined regarding the polarity and configurations, clinical domains, an perpetuating processes of the personality styles. Through numerous case study presentations, discussions will focus on how to integrate Rorschach variables and TAT themes within the context of the MACI I profile and Millon's personality theory. |

CORRECTIONS ASSESSMENT Presenter: Dr. John Stoner The personality pattern structure of the MCMI-llI test makes it ideal as a general screening instrument for criminal justice settings. This application is being enhanced through an extensive research program develop a corrections-specific interpretive report for the MCMI-lll test. Patterns, problems, and implications drawn from the MCMI-lll test wil be discussed. |

PTSD: THE USE OF THE MCMI TEST IN
TREATMENT PLANNING Presenter: Dr. George Everly Posttraumatic stress disorder and psychological trauma present some of the greatest challenges facing the field of mental health. The MiIIon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory facilitates discovery of therapeutic targets which go beyond mere symptom identification. When used with victims of trauma, the MCMI test can be an effective aid in formulating the nature of the traumatic response as well as a treatment plan for its mitigation. |

BEHAVIORAL HEALTH ASSESSMENT Presenter: Dr. Don Williams This workshop is intended for mental health professionals and will address the value of behavioral health assessment in medical patients. More specifically, psychological distress has been shown to be associated with significant medical and economic costs in medical patients. The relevant literature will be reviewed and the specifics of the instruments and methodology used in evaluating psychological distress and determining medical and economic costs will be demonstrated. A specific example utilizing data from a cardiac population will be detailed. Finally, the benefits to the practitioner in terms of outcome measurement and practice development will also be discussed. There will also be ample time allotted for addressing questions and discussion. |

EVALUATING JUVENILE OFFENDERS Presenter: Dr. Joseph McCann This workshop will address issues involved in evaluating juveniles at various stages of the criminal justice process, including pre-trial, pre-sentencing, and treatment planning. Specific areas to be addressed include the use of the MACI test in evaluating status offenders, adolescent drug dealers, juvenile sex offenders, malingering and deception, and voluntariness of confessions. |

ADULT FORENSIC ASSESSMENT Presenter: Dr. Frank Dyer This workshop covers forensic use of the Millon Inventories with adults. Topics include new federal and professional standards for psychometric evidence, technical adequacy of the inventories for forensic purposes, incorporating DSM-IV into testimony, testifying about test validity in terms of classification efficiency statistics, interpreting modifier indices in regard to psycho-legal issues, applications to civil and criminal cases, termination of parental rights, and impaired professionals. |
| ASSESSMENT FEEDBACK AS A THERAPEUTIC
TOOL: THE MCMI TEST Presenter: Dr. Luis Escovar In this workshop participants will learn to use the results of assessment to facilitate collaborative setting of goals by patient and therapist. The therapist conceptualizes the patient's presenting complaints using personal interviews and the results of the MCMI test. The product of this formulation is presented as feedback to the patient to facilitate setting collaborative therapeutic goals. These goals serve as targets for therapeutic change anc provide the basis for the development of a treatment plan by the therapist. |
